How much attic insulation does a Los Angeles home need?
Most of Los Angeles County is in climate zone 3. For that zone ENERGY STAR recommends R49 in an attic with no insulation, or adding R38 on top of 3 to 4 inches of existing insulation. Source: ENERGY STAR.
EPA estimates that homeowners save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs by air sealing and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements, and ENERGY STAR says 9 out of 10 U.S. homes are under-insulated. Source: ENERGY STAR.
In Los Angeles the attic is where summer heat gets in, so better insulation means cooler rooms and an AC that runs less. While we are up there we also check the ducts, and we can handle air duct cleaning and AC repair too.
Signs your attic needs insulation

What new insulation does in your attic
Drag the slider from before to after. Thin, flattened insulation leaves the joists bare and lets heat through the ceiling. New blown-in insulation covers the attic floor in an even, deep layer.

Every part of the attic
Adding insulation on top of air leaks and blocked vents only fixes half the problem. Here is what we check and how we handle it.
| Area | What we look for | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation depth | Thin, settled, or missing insulation | Measured in several spots, then brought up to the recommended level |
| Old or damaged insulation | Flattened, wet, stained, or rodent-soiled material | Vacuumed out and bagged, so new insulation starts on a clean attic floor |
| Air leaks | Gaps around light fixtures, pipes, wires, and chimneys | Sealed before new insulation goes in, as EPA recommends |
| Attic hatch | A bare hatch that leaks air into the attic | Insulated and weatherstripped so it closes tight |
| Eave vents | Insulation pushed against the soffit vents | Baffles keep the vents open so the attic can breathe |
| Ducts in the attic | Loose or leaking duct connections | Checked while we are up there, and we tell you what we find |

From the hatch to the attic, your home stays clean
Most Los Angeles attics are reached through a small hallway or closet hatch. We cover the floor under the ladder, wear shoe covers, and run the hoses along a protected path, so insulation stays in the attic and out of your rooms.
“David was by far the most responsive, communicative, thoughtful, and fairly priced. This was a large job and needed to be done with urgency. Couldn’t be happier with the service and the result and I will use them again.”
“David from Cool Breeze was prompt and came by within the hour of calling, which was great because the AC was not working during a heat wave. He was able to diagnose the problem immediately. He priced us reasonably and resolved the issue within an hour.”
“Cool Breeze sent a technician out to my rental property on a Sunday because I was in a hurry. They serviced both my heater and air conditioning unit and charged a reasonable amount. They also gave me good advice on how to upgrade the system without pressuring or frightening me.”

Attic insulation FAQs
Answers to the questions Los Angeles homeowners ask us most. More on our main FAQ page.
How much attic insulation does a Los Angeles home need?
Most of Los Angeles County is in climate zone 3. For that zone ENERGY STAR recommends R49 in an attic with no insulation, or adding R38 on top if you already have 3 to 4 inches (ENERGY STAR). We measure what you have and tell you how much to add.
How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?
Common signs are hot upstairs rooms, warm ceilings on summer afternoons, uneven temperatures between rooms, and high cooling bills. A quick check: if you can see the tops of the attic joists, the insulation is too thin.
Will attic insulation lower my energy bills?
It usually helps. EPA estimates that homeowners save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs by air sealing and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements (ENERGY STAR). Your savings depend on your home and how much insulation it has now.
Does attic insulation help in the summer?
Yes. In Los Angeles most of the heat that bothers you comes through the roof. The sun heats the attic, and thin insulation lets that heat through the ceiling, so your AC runs longer. More insulation slows that heat down and keeps rooms cooler.
How much does attic insulation cost in Los Angeles?
We use flat-rate pricing based on the job, with no surprise add-ons and no overtime fees. The price depends on the attic size and whether old insulation has to come out. Call (310) 469-1979 and we will give you the price before any work starts.
Do you remove old insulation?
Yes. If the old insulation is flattened, wet, stained, or soiled by rodents, we vacuum it out with a commercial insulation removal vacuum, bag it, and take it away before installing new insulation. If it is in good shape, we leave it and add on top.
Should the attic be air sealed before insulating?
Yes. EPA recommends air sealing the attic before adding insulation (ENERGY STAR). We seal gaps around light fixtures, pipes, wires, and the hatch first, because insulation alone does not stop air leaks.
What type of insulation do you install?
Most attics get blown-in insulation, which fills evenly around wires, pipes, and framing. Where batts fit better, we can install those instead. We explain the options during the inspection.
Will installing insulation make a mess in my house?
No. We lay drop cloths under the attic hatch and along the path, wear shoe covers, and keep the hoses and bags sealed, so insulation stays in the attic. We show you before and after photos when we finish.
How long does an attic insulation job take?
It depends on the size of the attic and whether old insulation needs to come out first. We tell you how long it will take before we start.
Are you licensed and insured, and can you come the same day?
Yes to both. Cool Breeze LA is licensed, bonded, and insured under CSLB #1154105, and same-day inspections are often available across Los Angeles County with dispatch 24 hours Sunday through Thursday. Read what customers say or learn about our team.
