How often should a chimney be swept and inspected?
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends having chimneys cleaned and inspected by a professional every year (USFA). The best time in Los Angeles is early fall, before the cool months and before the South Coast AQMD wood-burning season starts on November 1.
How do I know if my chimney needs cleaning?
Common signs are a smoky or campfire smell in the room, smoke drifting back into the house, black flakes of creosote falling into the firebox, fires that are hard to start, and animal noises or nesting material. If it has been more than a year since the last sweep, it is due.
What is creosote and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is the black, tar-like residue that wood smoke leaves inside the flue. It is highly flammable, and the U.S. Fire Administration lists creosote buildup and dirty chimneys among the causes of home heating fires (USFA). A sweep removes it before it can ignite.

Will a chimney sweep make a mess in my house?
No. We lay drop cloths, seal the fireplace opening, and pull the soot into a HEPA vacuum so it does not spread through the room. We show you before and after photos when we finish.
Do gas fireplaces need cleaning too?
Yes. Gas fireplaces do not build up creosote like wood, but the logs, burner, glass, and vent collect dust and soot, and birds and debris can block the vent. We clean and check gas fireplaces as well as wood-burning ones.
Can I use my fireplace on a No-Burn day?
Not with wood. From November 1 to the end of February the South Coast AQMD can issue mandatory No-Burn alerts that ban burning wood indoors and outdoors on forecast high-pollution days. Gas fireplaces are exempt (South Coast AQMD, AQMD FAQ). Book your sweep before the season so the fireplace is ready on the days you can use it.
What does a chimney cleaning include?

How long does a chimney sweep take?
Most single-flue chimneys take about one to two hours, including the inspection. Heavy creosote, tall chimneys, or several flues can take longer, and we tell you before we start.
Should I get the chimney inspected when buying or selling a home?
It is a good idea. A home sale is a common time to have the chimney checked, because a new owner does not know how it was used or maintained. Call us before escrow closes and we will sweep and inspect it.
