What Los Angeles Heat Actually Does to Your Air Conditioner
Manufacturers rate air conditioners for a climate that is not this one. A system sold with a 15 to 20 year life is measured against a house that cools for four months a year. In Los Angeles it cools for seven, sometimes eight, with the condenser sitting in direct sun and the ductwork baking in an attic.
That is why equipment here tends to reach the bottom of its rated life instead of the top.
Runtime is the number that matters
Wear on an air conditioner does not track calendar years. It tracks hours. A compressor running 1,400 hours a season ages about twice as fast as one running 700.
In the San Fernando Valley the cooling season opens in April and does not close until late October, and through July and August a system can run most of the daylight hours. By the time a valley system is twelve, it has often done the work of an eighteen year old system somewhere milder. Age on its own does not condemn a unit, but it explains why the same brand fails sooner here than the warranty would suggest.
A condenser in full sun
The outdoor unit works by dumping heat into the air around it. The hotter that air is, the harder the job, and a condenser in direct afternoon sun sits in air measurably hotter than the shade ten feet away.
Two things help and cost almost nothing. Keep two feet of clear space on every side, because the shrubs people plant to hide the unit are choking the airflow it runs on. And shade it if you can do it without blocking it, with an awning or a tree far enough back that leaves do not drop into the coil.
Covering it or boxing it in does not help. A condenser needs to breathe more than it needs shade.
Ducts in an attic that passes 130 degrees
This is the one homeowners rarely think about, and it is the biggest.
Most Los Angeles homes run supply and return ducts through an unconditioned attic. On a hot afternoon that attic passes 130 degrees. Air you cooled to 55 travels through it on the way to your rooms and does not arrive at 55. Any leak on the return side is worse, because it pulls that superheated attic air straight into the system.
The Department of Energy puts typical duct loss at 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through a system. In an attic that hot you are not only losing air you paid for, you are paying to cool the attic. This is usually the real answer when one room never gets comfortable no matter how long the unit runs, and it is why having the duct system inspected often does more than adjusting the thermostat again.
What Santa Ana season adds
The hardest weeks for equipment here are not always the hottest ones on the calendar. Santa Ana conditions bring hot, very dry offshore wind, and they arrive most often in autumn, after a system has already run a full season.
Two things happen at once. The wind drives fine grit into the condenser coil, which is the one surface in the system built to shed heat, and a coated coil sheds it poorly. At the same time the heat spike pushes a tired system to full output at exactly the point in the year when its parts have the most hours on them.
That combination is why so many failures land in September and October instead of July. During Santa Ana weeks, check the filter more often than the schedule says and look at the condenser to see whether the fins have gone grey with dust.
What the heat does to the parts
Capacitors fail first, and they fail in heat. Cheapest part in the system, and the most common reason an air conditioner quits in August.
Contactors pit and weld from the sheer number of starts a long season puts through them.
Fan motors run hotter, so bearings that would last a decade in a milder climate give out sooner.
Coils collect valley dust and Santa Ana grit, and a dirty coil insulates the one surface built to shed heat.
Compressors are the expensive failure, and they usually die because something cheaper failed first and nobody caught it.
What the heat costs you on the bill
Cooling is the largest single electricity load in most Los Angeles homes through summer, and runtime is the multiplier on every inefficiency in the system. A dirty coil, a clogged filter or a leaking return does not cost much per hour. Over seven months of running, it adds up to real money.
That is also why the cheap maintenance items return more here than the same work would in a milder climate. A filter change that cuts consumption by a few percent is applied against far more hours, and a duct leak you never found is charged to you every one of those hours.
If the bill climbs with no change in how you are living, treat that as a diagnostic result, not a billing question. It usually means low refrigerant, a fouled coil, or a component drawing more current than it should, and all three are cheaper to address early.
What helps
Change the filter every one to two months through the season instead of twice a year. The Department of Energy estimates that swapping a clogged filter for a clean one can cut an air conditionerβs consumption by 5 to 15 percent. Nothing else you can do for that money comes close.

Have the duct system tested instead of guessed at. Californiaβs Title 24 energy code already requires independent HERS verification on most duct work, so a licensed contractor will be measuring and documenting it as a matter of course.
Set the thermostat and leave it alone. Dropping it to 65 does not cool the house any faster. It runs the system longer at the same rate.
When patching stops making sense
Multiply the age of the unit in years by the cost of the repair in front of you. If the result clears roughly five thousand dollars, you are spending real money on equipment that owes you nothing.
Two service calls in one season is the clearer signal. So is an R-22 system with a refrigerant leak, because production and import of R-22 ended in 2020 and the only supply left is reclaimed and priced accordingly. Ask which refrigerant your system takes before you approve a recharge.

How long do air conditioners last in Los Angeles?
Usually toward the lower end of the 15 to 20 year range, and often closer to 12 in the valleys. The cooling season here runs roughly seven months, so a local system accumulates far more compressor hours than the rating assumes.
Does shading my air conditioner help?
Shade helps if it does not restrict airflow. An awning set well clear of the unit or a tree far enough back that leaves cannot reach the coil is fine. Covering the unit or enclosing it makes performance worse, because a condenser needs airflow more than it needs shade.
Why is one room always hotter than the rest of the house?
In most Los Angeles homes the cause is the ductwork, not the air conditioner. Ducts running through a 130 degree attic lose cooling on the way, and a leak or a crushed run to that room will keep it warm no matter how long the system operates.
Why does my AC fail in September rather than July?
By autumn the system has a full season of hours on it, and Santa Ana conditions bring heat and dust together. Parts that were marginal in July are pushed to full output with a fouled coil, which is when capacitors and contactors tend to give out.
